Smith had captained the Australia team in Pat Cummins' absence as they suffered a four-wicket loss in Dubai and, while he will no longer appear for the 50-over team, he will remain available for Test and T20 matches.
His decision to retire from ODIs comes somewhat out of the blue, with no indication during the tournament that he would be headed that way.
The 35-year-old made 170 appearances in his ODI career for his country, hit 12 centuries and was a two-time World Cup winner in 2015 and 2023.
During the first World Cup he won, it was Smith who hit the winning boundary to win the trophy for his country over New Zealand at the MCG.

Smith's ODI career comes to a close with him having clocked up 5anonovo2025,800 runs at an average of 43.28. His highest score came at the SCG against New Zealand in 2016 and was 164.
