Batting great Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals after Australia's ICC Champions Trophy 2024-25 semi-final defeat at the hands of India in Dubai on Tuesday. (Match Highlights | Full Coverage)

"It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it," Smith said in a Cricket Australia release. "There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey."

The 35-year-old will continue to be available for Test cricket and T20 International selections. He stepped up to lead the reigning ODI world champions at the ICC Champions Trophy in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins.

"Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way," the right-handed batter added.

"Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage."

According to the release, Smith told his teammates his decision to retire from the 50-over format soon after the four-wicket defeat at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
